In 1801 the Act of Union came into force, and Westminster became the centre for political debate. There were many demands for reform within Britain in the nineteenth century. The Irish question was only one of many issues hotly debated by the British Parliament. As the century progressed, Ireland came to the forefront of British political life, and dominated party politics.
