Liam's Irish Traditional Music - A Constitutional Dilemma

BACK

Republicans
Daniel O’Connell led a nationalist movement, which he believed should continue Ireland's political connection with Great Britain.  However, others saw Ireland’s future differently.  Supporters of republicanism in the French revolutionary tradition rejected any future connection with Britain, the monarchy and the Empire. They did not reject the idea of using force to achieve their independence. There were some small risings against Britain, none of which were successful.  In 1803 Robert Emmet led a republican uprising, and was tried and executed in 1848, the Young Irelanders led a rising in sympathy with revolutions in Europe, but the British government easily crushed them.  On 17 March 1858, James Stephens founded a secret society, which was to become known as the Irish Republican Brotherhood, or fenians the uprising it planned in 1867 was also a failure, despite financial support from Irish settlers in America and Canada.
