Many hundreds of people were killed in this uprising, but this is almost less important than, the effect it had on the Protestants in Ireland. From this time two distinct communities - one Protestant and English, the other Catholic and Irish - can be said to have developed in Ulster. The separation of these two communities was reinforced by stories, which became part of the oral and written history of the settlers. The division of the communities survives today.
