The Defeat of The Jacobites
James was defeated in two further battles at the Boyne and at Aughrim, and William of Orange won an important place in Protestant history Every year history is re-enacted in Ulster with celebrations of the bravery of the Apprentice Boys and the Battle of the Boyne, although present-day emotions have little real foundation in the events of the Seventeenth century. The celebrations take place on 12 July, and supporters of the "Orange" cause travel from all parts of Northern Ireland to Join the Apprentice Boys' Parade in Derry. The route of the march traces the pattern of settlement of the seventeenth-century plantation, from the "Bogside" where the Catholic settlement was originally situated, to inside the walls where the Protestants were in the majority. After his defeat, James returned to Europe, although in exile he was still considered the monarch of Catholic Irishmen and women. Those who felt that they could no longer stay in Ireland went to Europe or America as soldiers or as settlers.
