Landlords & Tenants
Landlords varied in attitude towards their tenants.  Some refused to collect rents from those they knew were destitute, and subsidized their tenants.  As far as they could, others were more unscrupulous, and used non-payment of rent as an excuse to clear their estates of tenants.  Some offered payment for the passage to Britain, or to America and Canada, on condition that the tenants houses were "tumbled" that is, pulled apart so that no more tenants could move in.
