The West of Ireland
Those in the west of Ireland suffered the greatest hardship. Seed was too, expensive to buy, and in short supply. Farming was neglected because the people had to find employment through the public work, schemes. It was impossible to live off fishing, because the local fishing boat, the curragh wasn’t suitable for deep sea fishing, and the gales on the west coast were too strong, all pawn able possessions were sold for food, and these included boats and rigging. Edible seaweed, turnips, cabbage leaves and weeds fed the people of County Mayo.
