Anglo Irish Talks Between London & Dublin 1984

Britain is committed to maintaining the status quo in Ulster. However, the upsurge of violence created a situation where talks between Britain and the Republic of Eire were put into effect in 1984. In 1985 they agreed to cooperate over border security, the restriction of terrorism and policing. Ulster Protestants have reacted strongly against the moves towards consultation between Dublin and Westminster, and have rejected the right of the British government to do this.

Ultimate responsibility for affairs in Ulster is held by the British government, and the maintenance of law and order, and the protection of all the citizens who live there, is under the control of Westminster. Any political change, which occurs, has to, have the consent of the British Parliament, and the support of all political parties. All the leaders of the British political parties welcomed the Anglo-Irish Agreement. The Ulster Unionists were the main opponents.
