Eire
In 1937 a new constitution was made law. Eire (or Ireland) was the new name of the new state. The British Cabinet and the Dominions debated this change and accepted it. The British government then agreed to leave Eire altogether. By the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 Britain had kept some naval bases. In 1928 these ports were given back. Eire could now follow an independent foreign policy, and this began in 1939, when Eire declared neutrality during the Second World War. In 1948 the republican dream was finally realized when Poblacht na hEireann, the Republic of Ireland, came into existence. Soon afterwards the Republic left the Commonwealth. In 1949, the British government reaffirmed the position of Northern Ireland, and stated that any change in the political situation in Ulster could come into effect only with the consent of the majority there. The only issue left unresolved, as far as Eire is concerned, is the partition, its permanence, and the future for the Protestant nation in Ulster.
