From 1971 more troops were sent from Britain to Ulster, and as the situation seemed to be rapidly moving out of control the British government agreed to the use of internment, Under a new law introduced In August 1971, the Ulster government could arrests and imprison anyone suspected of terrorist activity. By' now Catholics were completely estranged from the Ulster government, and increasingly anti-army because of the introduction of CS gas. Catholics were arrested in large numbers, and were subjected to various kinds of torture, which involved loss of sleep, loss of food and disorientation techniques. In retaliation the internees and prisoners have used hunger strikes and excrement smearing as weapons, as well as methods of terrorism.
